Can I reuse my hard drive?
In most cases hard drives can not be reused. In some cases it may be possible to reuse the drive. However, they are usually extremely unstable and it would be unwise to put them back in service. Furthermore, new hard drive prices are very low and it isn't worth the risk.
Why do you recommend not using Data Recovery software?
Generally speaking, data recovery software designed for consumer use should only be used for extremely simple cases. When using this type of software for sensitive cases it may make the problem even worse. Always consult with an expert before using data recovery software. On this same note, software can not fix mechanically damaged hardware.
My hard drive is still under warranty. Why don't I just send it to the manufacturer so they can recover my data?
Manufacturers of magnetic storage (while their products are under warranty) will replace the damaged unit with a new one. It has been our experience that they never recover data. It is worthy of mention, that once the warranty seal is broken on the hard drive your warranty ends. (Note: In order to perform data recovery on a hard drive you must break this seal).
I have a recent backup!
Whether your backup is on CD's, tape drives or floppies we recommend you try to copy the files to another computer.
Do not attempt to copy the information to the problem computer!
Unfortunately, in some cases backups are configured to be used on only one computer. And if that computer is the one with a hard drive problem it will be virtually impossible to recover your information from those backups. If you do have backups please send them (or a copy) along with your hard drive.
